What is Lived-In Colour? The Low-Maintenance Trend Explained

In the Chair

Colour that grows with you, not against you

If you've heard the phrase "lived-in colour" and wondered whether it's just another word for balayage, you're not alone - it's one of the questions we get asked most at the colour bowl. Lived-in colour isn't a single technique so much as a result: colour that looks natural, dimensional, and - most importantly - doesn't develop a hard, obvious line as it grows out.

It's a speciality of Lisa B, our Senior Stylist and Colour Director, who's spent nearly twenty years working with colour on both sides of the Atlantic, including as a colourist on Marvel film productions before relocating to the UK. Lived-in colour, along with balayage and Californian blondes, is one of the things she's asked for by name.

How It's Different

How lived-in colour differs from traditional highlights

Traditional highlights - foils placed close to the root, all the way through the head - give you strong, even contrast from day one. They look fantastic freshly done, but as your natural colour grows through at the root, the line between "new growth" and "highlighted hair" becomes obvious fairly quickly, which is why many clients end up booking in every six to eight weeks just to keep the regrowth in check.

Lived-in colour takes a different approach. Using freehand colour painting - the same technique behind balayage - colour is placed with the hair's natural fall and movement in mind, softer and lighter towards the ends and blended back into the base rather than starting hard at the root. The result reads as sun-kissed, natural depth rather than a grid of stripes, and because there's no sharp demarcation line, the regrowth simply softens over time instead of announcing itself.

"Good hair" isn't just how it looks leaving the salon - it means seamless colour, not stripy highlights, that falls into place with minimal effort.
Who It Suits

Why it works for busy lifestyles

One of the first things we ask in any consultation is about your day-to-day life - because a colour or style that needs an hour of styling every morning simply isn't realistic if your routine doesn't allow for it. Lived-in colour tends to suit exactly the client who doesn't want colour maintenance dictating their diary. Because it's designed to grow out gracefully, you're not racing back to the salon the moment you see half a centimetre of regrowth.

That doesn't mean no maintenance at all - you'll still want to come in periodically to refresh tone and keep the overall shape of the colour looking intentional, and Lisa will talk you through realistic timing at your consultation based on your natural colour, your hair's condition, and how much contrast you're after. But compared with a full head of close-to-root highlights, most clients find they can comfortably stretch the gap between colour appointments.

It also tends to be kinder to hair condition over time, since there's less repeated processing right at the root with every visit. All the colour used in the salon is applied with hair health built into the approach - we're not interested in colour that looks good walking out the door but leaves hair compromised a few washes later.

What to Expect

Getting started with lived-in colour

As with every colour service, we'll never touch your hair without a proper consultation first - talking through what you're hoping for, what you don't like, and an honest look at your current condition and texture so we can tell you what's realistic before anything begins. If you're new to colour or coming from a heavily highlighted look, we'll talk you through how the transition works and roughly how many visits it might take to get there.

You'll also need a colour allergy test at least 48 hours before your appointment - this is a legal requirement for colour services, not something we can skip. It's a small step that makes sure everything that follows goes smoothly. Read more about the specifics on our lived-in colour page, where you'll find the full service detail.

Whether you're after your first taste of lived-in colour or want to move away from a highlights routine that's become too high-maintenance, it's worth having the conversation. Lisa's happy to talk through what would suit your hair before you commit to anything.
