Goldwell vs Other Colour Brands: Why We Choose Goldwell
A choice built on more than loyalty
Clients sometimes assume that a salon uses a particular colour brand simply because of a supplier relationship or habit. Ours isn't that. I've spent over 30 years at Kao Professional Hair, the parent company behind Goldwell, KMS, Kerasilk and Varis - my career has taken me from salon stylist to global haircare educator, and I currently hold the role of Commercial Director of Education for Kao Europe alongside running The Establishment with Ross. That role means I'm responsible for making sure Kao's education is landing properly across salons in multiple countries, which gives me a genuinely unusual vantage point on how colour brands actually perform, not just how they market themselves.
So when I say we exclusively use Goldwell and KMS in the salon, it isn't a commercial arrangement dressed up as a preference. It's a deliberate professional choice, made with the kind of formulation knowledge and comparative product education that most salon owners simply don't have access to.
What "hair integrity" actually means for your hair
"Hair integrity" gets used as a marketing phrase a lot, so it's worth explaining plainly what it means in practice. Hair colour and lighteners work by opening the cuticle and altering the internal structure of the hair shaft - that's simply how colour chemistry works, whichever brand is used. The difference between a well-formulated product and a poorly formulated one is what happens to the hair's structure while that process is taking place, and how much condition you get back once it's finished.
Goldwell's permanent and semi-permanent colours, along with their lighteners, are formulated with hair integrity built directly into the product - meaning the goal isn't just to change the tone of your hair, it's to do that without unnecessary compromise to the hair's condition. In real terms, that's the difference between colour that still feels and moves like healthy hair afterwards, and colour that achieves the right shade but leaves the hair feeling compromised, dry or prone to breakage. Every chemical we use in the salon is also vegan, which is part of the same broader standard we hold our product choices to.

KMS and TRIfinity Technology
Colour is only half the picture - how hair is styled and finished day to day matters just as much to its long-term condition. This is where KMS comes in. KMS styling and finishing products are built around what's called TRIfinity Technology, and organised into three clear stages: START, STYLE and FINISH. Each stage is designed to work with the next rather than fighting against it, so you're not layering products that cancel each other out or weigh hair down.
Alongside KMS, we use Goldwell StyleSign for heat and UV protection and colour-fade prevention, and Goldwell Dualsenses for retail haircare that gives clients visible improvement and colour protection at home. We also work with Varis tools - professional electrical dryers and brushes engineered by and for global stylists, not available to the general public - which matters more than people often realise, because the tool doing the styling affects the finish just as much as the product in it.
What my role at Kao means for clients in the chair
Because of my role running commercial education for Kao Europe, our team gets access to information most salons wait years for - advance knowledge of which products are genuinely worth investing in, sustainability data behind the formulations, and product education that goes well beyond the standard brand training every salon receives. We're not guessing at what's coming next in colour technology; we're often part of the conversation that shapes it, from early concept through to launch.
That knowledge feeds straight back into the salon. Lisa B, our Colour Director, is currently halfway through the year-long Goldwell Master Colorist programme, and our wider team trains regularly - Tuesday mornings on colour, Wednesday mornings on cutting, plus international events like the Goldwell ColorSphere, which the salon sends the team to every two years. Being an authorised Goldwell and Kao salon isn't automatic; not every salon qualifies, and we take that standard seriously.
The best of the best, chosen deliberately
Choosing a colour brand isn't just a supply decision, it's a promise about what happens to your hair every time you sit in the chair. Goldwell and KMS were chosen because, from where I sit within the industry, they represent the best available combination of colour performance and hair health - not because it was the easiest or most obvious option.
You can find out more about how this plays out in the salon on our Goldwell salon in Farnham page, and read more from the team on the blog.
