Foil highlights vs balayage
Foil highlights and balayage both lighten hair, but they work in completely different ways, and choosing the right one starts with a proper conversation about what you want. Foils use precise sections of hair wrapped in foil, giving a more uniform, consistent lift from root to tip - ideal if you want defined dimension or a bolder, brighter result. Balayage is a hand-painted, freehand technique that grows out softly with no visible regrowth line - it's a speciality of our colourist Lisa B, who works in Balayage, lived-in colour and Californian blondes. Neither is "better" - they're different tools for different outcomes, and we'll talk you through which suits your hair, your maintenance routine and the look you're after before anything begins.
As with every colour service at The Establishment, foil highlights start with a proper consultation - never a client's hair touched without asking first - and every technical colour service requires a mandatory allergy test 48 hours beforehand, which is a legal requirement rather than salon preference (Goldwell Elumen is the one exception).

If you don't need a full head of colour, we offer two quicker, more targeted options. Our T-Bar service applies colour around the hairline and through the parting only - the areas that show growth fastest - as an express service with a maximum of 15 foils. It's a genuinely useful option for keeping regrowth blended between fuller appointments, without the time or cost of a complete head of foils.
We can also add scattered foils to almost any service - up to 10 foils - to lift a few pieces around the face or through the crown. Scattered foils are charged per foil and per colour bowl used, so you only pay for what's actually applied. Both options are things we can talk through at your consultation, alongside a realistic assessment of your hair's current condition and what's achievable.

Professional colour, formulated for hair health
The Establishment is an authorised Goldwell and Kao salon - not every salon qualifies - and colour here is applied using Goldwell's permanent, semi-permanent and lightening ranges, engineered with hair integrity built into the formulation rather than bolted on afterwards. All chemicals used in the salon are vegan. Our Salon Director Claire's own role as Commercial Director of Education for Kao Europe means the team gets early access to industry trends and advance knowledge of which products are actually worth investing in, so what goes on your hair is genuinely the best of the best, not just whatever's on the shelf.
